Ranking report + AI/SEO proposal7 October 2026Google.com · Australia · EN

Dive in Australia

72 of 168 tracked terms are already in the top 10, and 13 are at #1. The brand is trusted. What’s holding it back is the site’s structure. There are no destination pages, so Google guesses: Coral Bay searches land on Whitsundays and Sydney pages, the shop archive ranks for Townsville, and “Great Barrier Reef diving” sits at #40. This report shows what’s working, what’s structurally wrong, and how SEO and AI search can fix it.

What we spotted

✓
Strong national visibility
13 terms rank #1, including broad searches like “scuba diving holidays Australia”, “best diving in Australia” and “Australia dive tours”. The brand is clearly trusted at a national level.
Pass
✓
Marine encounter pages pull their weight
The great white shark page ranks for 13 terms (12 of them in the top 10), and the whale shark, manta ray and grey nurse shark pages all rank on page one.
Pass
!
Google is guessing which page to show for locations
“Coral Bay diving” ranks a Whitsundays day trip, “Coral Bay dive course” ranks a Whitsunday PADI course, “Coral Bay scuba diving” ranks the Sydney diving page and “whale shark diving Australia” ranks the great white shark page.
Fix
!
The shop archive is standing in for real pages
The /product/ listing page ranks for 7 terms, including Townsville, humpback whales and “Great Barrier Reef diving holidays”, because there is no dedicated page for any of them.
Fix
!
The biggest Great Barrier Reef terms are buried
“Great Barrier Reef diving” #40, “Great Barrier Reef scuba diving” #37, “Great Barrier Reef liveaboard” #32, “Cairns scuba diving” #35 and “Cairns diving” #23.
Fix
!
Old URLs are still ranking
Four terms rank through legacy /?product= links, including a Sydney learn-to-dive link for “diving certification Australia” (#83).
Fix
!
No movement in 30 days
Every term held its position over 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days. This is the baseline future reports are measured against.
Watch
Baseline. Rankings are strong for broad national terms and for the marine encounter pages. The weakness is everything that depends on a location or a product line, because the site has no page built for it. 14 terms are outside the top 100 and 43 more sit between #21 and #100. This export shows positions only, with no search volumes, so treat it as the baseline future reports are measured against.
02What’s structurally wrong

The site is built like a shop, not a guide

We audited the menu, templates, sitemap and key pages. Six structural issues explain most of the gaps in this report, ordered by impact.

1
No destination or experience landing pages
Biggest issueSite-wide
IssueEvery one of the 30+ menu links (Cairns, Coral Sea, Ribbon Reefs, Whitsundays, Ningaloo, Port Lincoln, Courses, Marine Experiences) points to a filtered shop URL like /product/?_product_locations=cairns. All of them tell Google they are the same page as /product/, share one title and have no H1.
ImpactGoogle sees one shop page, not 30 destination pages. With nothing built for “Cairns diving” or “Coral Bay diving”, it picks whichever product or blog post looks closest, which is why the wrong pages rank and the big terms sit at #23 to #40.
FixBuild real hub pages for each destination and experience (Cairns & Ribbon Reefs, Coral Sea, Whitsundays, Ningaloo & Coral Bay, Exmouth, Townsville & SS Yongala, Port Lincoln, learn to dive, whale sharks, minke whales, manta rays). Each needs unique copy, the trip grid, seasons, FAQs and a clear booking path. Point the menu at them.
Great Barrier Reef diving #40Cairns diving #23Townsville diving #37Exmouth diving tours 101+Cairns Great Barrier Reef diving 101+Ningaloo scuba diving #23
2
The same trips live on several URLs
High impact57 URLs ranking
IssueThere are 124 product URLs plus 90 pages, and many trips exist twice. Summer Jo’s 3 day liveaboard is both a page and a product, the Ningaloo open water course exists as /open-water-course/, -2 and -3, there are two near-identical “why the Great Barrier Reef is the ultimate destination” pages, and dated 2025-26 expedition pages are still live.
Impact57 different URLs rank for 154 terms. Google splits links and relevance between copies instead of building one strong page, so none of them reach the top.
FixPick one URL per trip and 301 redirect the copies. Fold dated expedition pages into evergreen ones that are updated each season. Redirect the legacy /?product= links.

3
Missing on-page basics
Quick winsTemplate fixes
IssueThe homepage has no H1 (its main heading is an H2), and neither do the shop or blog hub. Many product pages have two or three H1s. /dive-locations/ has no meta description. The marine life archives are titled “Dwarf Minke Whale Archives” and aren’t linked from the menu. 18 of 23 homepage images have no alt text, and the 2026 Cairns guide still has “2025” in its title.
ImpactThese are the signals Google and AI tools read first to work out what each page is about. Getting them wrong makes every other fix less effective.
FixOne H1 per page, a unique title and description on every hub, alt text across the image library, a refresh of dated titles, and a decision on the marine life archives: build them out as proper pages or noindex them.
Homepage: no H1Shop & blog hub: no H1Products: multiple H1s18/23 images without alt
4
No structured data for trips
AI + rich results124 products
IssuePages only output the basic WebPage and Organization markup from Yoast. There is no Product or TouristTrip, Offer (price, dates, availability), AggregateRating or FAQ markup anywhere, even though a reviews plugin is installed.
ImpactWithout it the listings can’t show prices or star ratings in Google, and AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews struggle to pull out what is sold, where it departs, how long it runs and what it costs.
FixAdd TouristTrip and Product markup with Offers to every trip, FAQ markup on every hub, and review markup from real customer reviews. Validate in Search Console.
Prices in GoogleStar ratingsFAQ answersAI-readable trip details
5
Sitemap and index clean-up
Housekeeping90 pages audited
IssueThe sitemap includes /404-2/, /subscribe/, an unrelated /divevolk-seatouch-4-max/ page and a broken slug (/product4-night-minke-whale-adventures-ribbon-reefs/). Location filters aren’t in the sitemap at all.
ImpactGoogle spends crawl time on junk pages and gets mixed messages about what matters on the site.
FixRemove utility pages from the index, fix or redirect broken slugs, and once the hubs exist, add them to the sitemap with internal links from every related trip.
/404-2//subscribe//divevolk-seatouch-4-max/broken product slug
6
Blog posts are doing the job of money pages
Medium impact12 terms on one post
Issue/cairns-liveaboard-dive-trips/, a blog post from November 2020, ranks for 12 terms including “Cairns liveaboard” and “Cairns scuba diving”. The 14 terms outside the top 100 include SS Yongala, Ningaloo whale shark tours, Exmouth, Port Douglas and Port Lincoln, even though trips for them are sold on the site.
ImpactSearchers land on an article instead of a page built to compare and book, and whole products have no page that ranks at all.
FixTurn the strongest posts into commercial hubs (or link them firmly to the new hubs), and give every product line that is sold a page that targets it.

03AI search

Divers now ask AI where to go

Questions like “best liveaboard from Cairns” or “when can I swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo” are increasingly answered by Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini before anyone clicks a link. These tools quote pages that are clearly structured, factual and written by people with real experience. Dive in Australia has the experience. The site just doesn’t present it in a way AI can use.

TodayWhere the site is now

!
No llms.txt
diveinaustralia.com.au/llms.txt returns a 404, so there is no summary for AI crawlers.
Fix
!
Key facts buried in long copy
The Sail Ningaloo product page runs to about 6,100 words. Price, season, duration and departure point are hard to extract.
Fix
!
No FAQ answers
None of the pages reviewed has an FAQ block, and there is no FAQ markup.
Fix
!
No trip markup
AI tools can’t reliably read what each trip is, where it leaves from or what it costs.

Priority next steps

01
Fix the foundations
H1s, titles, descriptions and alt text on the templates; redirect duplicate trip URLs and the legacy /?product= links; clean the sitemap; refresh dated titles. This makes every later step count for more.
02
Build the destination hubs
Start with the pages that cover the most terms: Cairns & Ribbon Reefs, Ningaloo & Coral Bay, and Whitsundays. Then Coral Sea, Townsville & SS Yongala, Exmouth and Port Lincoln. Point the menu at them instead of the shop filters.
03
Build the experience hubs
Whale sharks, dwarf minke whales, manta rays, great whites and learn to dive. Each gets seasons, the best trips, FAQs and Steve’s advice, and the great white page model is reused across the rest.
04
Roll out structured data
TouristTrip and Product markup with Offers on all 124 trips, FAQ markup on every hub and review markup from real customer reviews.
05
Optimise for AI search
Answer-first summaries, comparison tables, an author profile for Steve and an llms.txt. Start tracking how often AI assistants recommend Dive in Australia.
06
Push the near-page-one terms
Terms sitting at #11–13 (Whitsundays diving, best scuba diving Australia, dive trips Australia, Ribbon Reef diving and more) should move onto page one once the hubs link to them.
07
Re-measure monthly
Track movement against this baseline, add search volumes to the tracking so we can show traffic value, and report on AI mentions alongside rankings.
